IG Metall Seeks German-French Parity in KNDS Listing

IG Metall official Juergen Kerner says Berlin needs more than a 25% stake in KNDS to ensure parity with France. This would protect domestic jobs and tech.

Germany must ensure its ownership stake matches that of France in the upcoming 20 billion euro ($23 billion) initial public offering of KNDS, according to a senior labor representative. The company, which manufactures the Leopard tank, is preparing for a significant market debut that has drawn international attention. Juergen Kerner, the deputy head of the IG Metall union, stated that maintaining parity is essential to protecting domestic industrial interests.

Currently, KNDS is owned through a 50-50 partnership between the French government and the family owners of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). The German family owners are planning to sell their entire stake in an IPO expected to take place in June or July. While the German government is reportedly considering a purchase of at least 25.1%, Kerner argues that this level of involvement would be insufficient to maintain a balance with French holdings.

Even if France was prepared to reduce its stake to, for example, less than 40%, a blocking minority of 25% would not be sufficient.

The planned listing could rank among the largest in Europe this year, establishing KNDS as one of the top ten defense firms in the region. This comes at a time when European nations are significantly increasing military expenditures. Kerner warned that without a larger stake, the nation risks losing strategic influence over a critical defense asset.

Otherwise, Germany runs the risk of losing control of a key company in the course of the IPO.

Kerner holds a high-profile role in the industrial sector, maintaining seats on the supervisory boards of several major corporations, including SIEMENS ENERGY AG, THYSSENKRUPP AG, SIEMENS AG-REG, and TRATON SE.

The German government has stated it is currently reviewing the terms of a potential investment, including the size of the stake and the overall ownership structure. Representatives for KNDS and its German owners have declined to comment on the matter.
