Finance leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) have declared their readiness to take decisive action to mitigate the economic risks and inflationary pressures stemming from the conflict involving Iran. During the International Monetary Fund and World Bank spring meetings in the United States, French Finance Minister Roland Lescure highlighted that the global economic outlook remains contingent on the duration and intensity of the Middle East crisis. The G7, which includes France, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Italy, is focused on stabilizing energy markets. This includes monitoring price volatility for Brent Crude Oil and West Texas Oil. Last month, with G7 support, the International Energy Agency released record oil reserves to offset supply disruptions caused by tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. > We need to make sure that we understand where the balance of risks is tilting in the next few weeks. Lescure noted that the group would meet again in Paris in one month to evaluate the situation and determine if further inventory releases are necessary. Bank of France Governor Francois Villeroy de Galhau added that central banks are committed to preventing energy and commodity shocks from embedding into core inflation through secondary price impacts. > We will act, without hesitation, if and when necessary, but we are not in a rush mode. The G7 finance leaders also pledged continued assistance to Ukraine, particularly in securing its energy infrastructure against ongoing attacks from Russia. Lescure emphasized that the conflict in the Middle East should not distract from the support needed for Kyiv. > Ukraine should never be a collateral damage of the current war in Iran. In a related move to pressure Moscow, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that a temporary 30-day waiver on sanctions for Russian oil stranded at sea would not be renewed following its expiration. Additionally, the G7 discussed collaborative efforts to establish alternative supply chains for critical minerals and rare earths, aiming to decrease the collective dependency on China. These initiatives are expected to be formalized during the G7 leaders' summit in June.
