Lisbon metro project drops Chinese firm over EU subsidies
The EU found that a Chinese bidder in the Lisbon subway project used unfair subsidies. The group will now hire a Polish firm for the 600 million euro line.
The European Commission has ruled that a company from China involved in a major infrastructure project in Portugal benefited from unfair foreign subsidies. The decision specifically targets the procurement process for the expansion of the Lisbon subway system, necessitating a change in the construction consortium.
An in-depth investigation launched in late 2025 revealed that a subsidiary of CRRC CORP LTD-A received state support that distorted the bidding process. The Commission determined that this financial backing provided the firm with an undue competitive advantage over other international bidders.
