EASA monitors safety risks from squeezed flight corridors

European aviation regulators are addressing risks from concentrated flight paths and drone activity. New guidelines aim to mitigate hazards across the airspace.

The European aviation sector is facing heightened safety risks as escalating global conflicts squeeze traditional flight corridors and increase the prevalence of drone activity. According to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the month-old war involving Iran is significantly reshaping Middle Eastern airspace, leading to increased disruption for flights traveling between Asia and Europe. This regional instability, combined with the long-standing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and fighting between Pakistan and Afghanistan, has forced airlines into increasingly narrow flight paths. These congested routes often pass over Azerbaijan and parts of Central Asia, creating new operational challenges for air traffic management.

"Its clear that concentrating traffic on certain routes, the availability of the airspace for air traffic control, the fact that traffic can use routes which are not so usual, can generate safety risks," said Florian Guillermet, the executive director of EASA.
