EU to mandate low carbon and locally made goods for public contracts
Ursula von der Leyen announced plans to favor EU-made goods in public procurement today. The rules aim to support local firms over foreign competitors.
The European Commission announced today, February 11, 2026, new requirements to prioritise EU-made goods and low-carbon criteria in public procurement. These measures are set to be a central focus of the Industrial Accelerator Act, which the Commission plans to propose later this month.
The move was presented by the European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, as a way to favour European companies and address the use of subsidised foreign products in public purchasing. By prioritising goods produced within the European Union, the initiative aims to support regional industry and ensure that public spending aligns with environmental standards.
