EU Leaders Open Summit Facing Divisions on Energy and China
European Union leaders gathered in Brussels for a summit marked by sharp divisions over soaring energy prices, the bloc budget, and Chinese trade imbalances. Discussions also addressed regional security, support for Ukraine, and Russian assets.

European Union leaders opened a two-day summit on Thursday in Brussels tackling surging energy costs, a competitive 27-nation budget, and cheap imports from China. The talks follow an agreement with Beijing capping hybrid car shipments to address a goods trade deficit that reached €360 billion ($400 billion). High energy prices triggered by the war in Iran have pressured budgets and corporate margins.
