European Union leaders have officially appointed Boris Vujcic, the current governor of the central bank of Croatia, as the next vice president of the European Central Bank (ECB). Vujcic will serve a non-renewable eight-year term, marking a significant shift in the leadership of the Frankfurt-based institution.

Scheduled to take office on June 1, the 61-year-old economist will succeed Spain's Luis de Guindos. Vujcic, a trained monetary economist and former university professor, brings extensive experience to the role, having served as a governor or deputy governor for more than 25 years. He was a central figure in his country's international integration, successfully negotiating its accession to the European Union in 2013 and later overseeing its entry into the euro zone as the 20th member nation in 2023. This trajectory made his country the second-newest member of the bloc, following Bulgaria.

In terms of monetary policy, Vujcic is widely regarded as a moderate hawk. He has consistently voiced concerns regarding lingering inflation risks, arguing that any policy easing should be executed gradually to ensure that price pressures are thoroughly extinguished.

The decision to appoint Vujcic is seen as a notable departure from historical trends at the ECB. Since the bank's inception over a quarter-century ago, top leadership positions have predominantly been held by representatives from the euro zone's four largest economies. By selecting a candidate from one of the bloc's smaller economies, EU leaders are providing a broader geographic representation at the highest levels of European monetary policy.
