ECB urges banks to boost cyber investment against AI
ECB Vice President Luis de Guindos says banks must boost cybersecurity spending to counter AI risks. Structural investment is now needed for all lenders.
The European Central Bank (ECB) warned Euro zone lenders to increase cybersecurity spending to counter AI models that identify software vulnerabilities. Outgoing Vice President Luis de Guindos issued the warning following a meeting with lenders on late afternoon the following day. AI-powered threats like Anthropic's Mythos challenge legacy systems, forcing banks to choose between higher capex or increased breach risks.
Luis de Guindos told reporters on Wednesday morning that banks must reach deeper into their pockets to strengthen defenses. He described the need for additional cybersecurity investment as a structural requirement for the near future. The ECB has spent weeks questioning lenders about their preparedness for large language models.
