Dutch regulator launches investigation into PostNL takeover of Sandd
The Dutch regulator is investigating PostNL over its 2019 takeover of Sandd. This follows a ruling that the deal likely harmed market competition.
The ACM (Netherlands
NL consumer protection regulator) has launched an investigation into PostNL’s 2019 acquisition of Sandd. This development follows a ruling by the Dutch Trade and Industry Appeals Tribunal, which determined that the ACM had rightly refused a permit for the takeover. Although the Dutch government at the time had allowed the acquisition to proceed, the recent tribunal decision has prompted a new review of the transaction.
The probe is significant because it concerns potential harm to competition and stability in the Dutch postal market. Regulators are now investigating the long-term impact of the merger on the industry, as the Dutch Trade and Industry Appeals Tribunal affirmed that the original refusal of the permit was justified. The investigation aims to ensure that market dynamics remain fair and stable for all participants.
