Berman defeats Steil in Wisconsin House race

Democrat Mitchell Berman narrowly defeated Republican incumbent Bryan Steil in Wisconsin's first congressional district. The victory flips a seat held by Republicans for decades as Democrats secure key wins.

Republican Congressman Bryan Steil addresses a crowd of a few dozen people at Route 20 in Sturtevant to concede to Democrat Mitchell Berman. It's the first time in roughly 30 years that a Democrat has won Wisconsin's 1st district.

Democrat Mitchell Berman narrowly defeated Republican incumbent Bryan Steil to flip Wisconsin's 1st District, securing 144,300 votes against 138,000. The upset ends three decades of Republican control in a district that voted for Donald Trump in 2016, 2020, and 2024. The win brings the United States congressional delegation split in Wisconsin to four Democrats and four Republicans.
