The Clearing Corporation of India has implemented an additional margin on USD/INR forward trades in response to heightened market volatility in India. The clearing house announced on Thursday that it will levy a volatility margin equivalent to 20% of the initial margin, effective immediately, under its foreign exchange forward segment regulations. This regulatory step is expected to increase the total margin utilization for the segment. The CCIL noted that these measures would also extend to the dollar-rupee options segment whenever a volatility margin is imposed. The decision follows a period of sharp movements in the forward markets, triggered by recent interventions from the Reserve Bank of India aimed at curbing arbitrage and speculative activities. The central bank's restrictions have led to a widespread unwinding of arbitrage positions, which has subsequently exposed the forward markets to increased price swings. For instance, the one-year implied yield for the currency pair surged by more than 70 basis points on Thursday, reaching 3.67%. Simultaneously, the one-month forward premium experienced a wide trading range, oscillating between 24 paisa and 39 paisa, a significant departure from standard session averages. In the wake of these curbs, the Indian rupee saw a sharp appreciation during Thursday's session, climbing approximately 2% to reach a peak of 92.8350. The clearing house has instructed its members to ensure their common collateral accounts are adequately funded, stating that the new volatility margin will remain in effect until further notice.
