Beijing called on the UK to respect market principles regarding British Steel. China warned it would protect its firms after plans for full nationalisation.

China urged the United Kingdom to act prudently regarding plans to nationalize British Steel on May 14. The statement follows Prime Minister Keir Starmer's announcement on Monday to move the steelmaker into full public ownership. Britain seized operational control from Chinese owner Jingye Group in April 2025.
