The government of China has reportedly instructed the Denmark-based shipping giant Maersk and the Switzerland-based Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) to cease their operations at two major ports in Panama. According to a report by the Financial Times, the Chinese state planner held a meeting last month where it told both firms to immediately withdraw from the Balboa and Cristóbal terminals located at the Panama Canal. The companies were allegedly cautioned against engaging in illegal activities that could harm the interests of Chinese enterprises and were urged to uphold commercial ethics and international rules. While Reuters could not independently verify these claims, the involved parties, including the Chinese foreign ministry, have not yet provided official comments.
