China negotiates with Iran for safe Hormuz tanker passage
China is negotiating with Iran for safe passage of energy tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. The move follows a sharp drop in shipping as the war continues.
China is currently engaged in diplomatic negotiations with Iran to secure safe passage for vessels carrying crude oil and Qatar liquefied natural gas (LNG) through the Strait of Hormuz. The discussions come as the conflict involving the United States and Israel against Tehran enters its sixth day, leaving the critical shipping route largely inaccessible. This disruption has effectively cut off global markets from approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and LNG supply.
Beijing, which maintains a strategic relationship with Tehran, has expressed significant concern over the paralysis of shipping in the region. As the world's second-largest economy, China is particularly vulnerable, sourcing roughly 45% of its crude oil through the Strait. Diplomatic sources indicate that Chinese officials are pressing the Islamic Republic to exempt their energy shipments from the ongoing blockade to stabilize domestic supply chains.
