Beijing May Retaliate Against Mexico Import Duty Hikes
China claims the right to retaliate against Mexico after new tariffs threatened over nine billion dollars in exports. The measures impact major auto sectors.
China has formally stated that recent trade measures enacted by Mexico, including significant tariff hikes, represent substantial barriers to trade and investment. Following an official investigation, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced on Wednesday that it maintains the right to implement retaliatory countermeasures to protect its economic interests.
The impact of these duties is extensive, affecting over $30 billion in Chinese exports. The ministry estimates that the mechanical and electrical sectors could suffer losses totaling $9.4 billion. Within this category, the automobile and auto parts industries are expected to bear the brunt of the impact with projected losses of approximately $9 billion. This is particularly significant as Mexico served as the primary destination for Chinese vehicle exports in 2025.
