Canada Reports Lower Deficit and New Spending in Update
Prime Minister Mark Carney reported a C$66.9 billion deficit for the past fiscal year. The update commits C$55 billion to new infrastructure and skilled worker programs through 2031.
Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney projected a C$66.9 billion deficit for the 2025-26 fiscal year, a 14% reduction from previous estimates. The update follows Carney's first year in office and a November budget that prioritized defense and infrastructure spending. Investors face a government that is recycling a C$60 billion revenue windfall into new spending rather than debt reduction.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said higher corporate taxes and Brent Crude Oil prices will boost federal revenue by C$7.2 billion annually through 2030. The government plans to spend C$55 billion over the next five years on new programs. This spending trajectory keeps the long-term deficit nearly unchanged from November projections.
