TSX futures slip as US-Iran tensions threaten ceasefire
TSX futures fell 0.3% as US-Iran tensions threatened the ceasefire. Oil prices rose over 6% following the renewed closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.
Futures for the main stock index in Canada edged lower on Monday morning as heightened geopolitical friction between the United States and Iran threatened to undermine a standing ceasefire. June futures on the S&P/TSX index were down 0.3% at 5:22 a.m. ET, reflecting investor anxiety after American authorities seized an Iranian vessel and Tehran subsequently pledged to retaliate.
The situation has led to a renewed blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for global energy transit. In response to the supply concerns, Brent Crude Oil prices jumped by more than 6%. Conversely, safe-haven flows into the greenback pressured precious metals, with Gold falling 0.6% and Silver dropping 1.6%. The shift in the broader market environment also impacted the USD/CAD pair as traders assessed the impact on Canadian trade.
