Canadian retail sales dipped in December but early estimates point to a January rebound

Retail sales in Canada dropped by 0.4 percent in December due to lower vehicle sales. However, early estimates suggest a 1.5 percent recovery in January.

Statistics Canada reported on February 20 that retail sales in Canada CACA fell by 0.4% month-on-month in December to a total of C$70 billion. This decline was led by a drop in sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers, alongside weaker performance from building materials retailers and furniture, electronics and appliances retailers. As retail sales represent approximately 40% of consumer spending and serve as an early indicator of GDP, the December decrease could translate to weaker near-term economic activity.
