BYD to Begin Production at Hungary Plant in Late 2026
Chinese automaker BYD expects to begin vehicle production at its new factory in Szeged, Hungary, by the end of 2026 as it prioritizes European expansion. The company has paused its planned facility in Turkey to focus on the Hungarian site and a potential second production location in Europe.
BYD will begin assembling vehicles at its new Hungary plant in late 2026, marking a one-year delay from original estimates. The company paused a $1B project in Turkey to focus resources on its first European production hub. Local manufacturing enables BYD to bypass European Union tariffs following a 144% year-to-date surge in regional sales.
Executive Vice President Stella Li told Reuters at the United Kingdom headquarters that Hungary is the top priority. BYD is currently installing equipment at the Szeged facility in southern Hungary.
