UK health watchdog backs AbbVie ovarian cancer treatment
ABBVIE INC received a recommendation from the United Kingdom cost-effectiveness watchdog on Thursday to provide its ovarian cancer therapy, Elahere, to National Health Service patients. The decision follows a revised value appraisal framework established under a trade agreement between Britain and the United States last year. This approval grants hundreds of critically ill patients access to a targeted treatment previously restricted to private care or clinical trials.
### Expanding Access to Targeted Oncology The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) stated that Elahere will be available through a confidential commercial agreement. This move marks the first new treatment option for this specific stage of ovarian cancer in over 20 years. NICE expects 270 patients to be eligible in the first year, with that figure rising to 420 by the third year.
