Boeing and Technion Begin Sustainable Aviation Fuel Development from Green Hydrogen and Carbon Dioxide
Boeing and Technion are developing clean aviation fuels from green hydrogen and carbon dioxide. The project aims to meet the industry's net-zero 2050 targets.
Insights:
On January 27, 2026, The Boeing Company and Technion announced the start of development for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from feedstocks including green hydrogen and carbon dioxide. This transition from the initial feasibility phase to the development phase marks a significant step for the aerospace sector in IL
IL. The project is designed to move toward competitive commercial production of fuels that can significantly reduce carbon emissions compared to traditional petroleum-based jet fuel.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel can be manufactured from a wide array of sources, including cover crops, non-edible plants, agricultural and forestry waste, and non-recyclable municipal waste. It can also be derived from industrial plant off-gassing and used cooking oil. Despite its potential to cut emissions significantly, SAF remains two to five times more expensive than conventional fuel. The Boeing Companyhas acknowledged that the process to develop SAF on a large scale could still take several more years to materialize.
