Blykalla Seeks State Funding for Swedish Nuclear Park
Swedish developer Blykalla has applied for government loans and price guarantees to build a 330-megawatt lead-cooled reactor park near Gavle. The project aims to begin power production by the early 2030s as part of Sweden's plan to expand nuclear capacity to meet rising electricity demand.
Blykalla applied for state financing on June 5 to develop an advanced nuclear reactor park near Gavle, Sweden. The developer joins state-owned utility Vattenfall as the second applicant for a 440B crown ($47B) government support package. Access to these low-interest loans and price guarantees is essential for private firms to manage the high capital risks of new nuclear construction.
### Scaling Small Modular Reactors Blykalla plans to build a 330-megawatt park capable of powering 150,000 homes. The project utilizes 55-megawatt reactors cooled by an updated lead-technology first developed in Russia during the 1950s. CEO Jacob Stedman said the company will now begin formal negotiations with the government regarding the funding request.
