BHP Group Limited has appointed Brandon Craig as its new Chief Executive Officer, placing the 25-year company veteran at the helm of the world’s largest listed miner. Craig, a South Africa-born engineer-turned-manager, takes leadership as the industry faces intensifying competition for copper and escalating geopolitical tensions. His immediate focus is expected to center on operational stability and strengthening global ties rather than pursuing immediate large-scale acquisitions or organizational restructuring.

During his first media engagement following the appointment, Craig emphasized the importance of organic growth and disciplined investment. He highlighted that any potential buyout options would need to be exceptionally compelling to warrant attention from the board.

\"What's going to be really critical is to continue to focus on building really strong relationships with both governments and customers,\" he said.

A key priority for the new leadership will be navigating the complex relationship with China, the company's top customer. Relations have recently been strained by disputes over supply terms with the China Mineral Resources Group (CMRG), leading to trade disruptions for certain products. Craig and the executive team are scheduled to visit the United Kingdom and China in the coming weeks as part of a global engagement tour.

Craig, now a naturalized citizen of Australia, previously led the company’s Western Australia iron ore business and its Americas division. This background provides him with significant experience in the two most critical sectors of the business. He noted that his time in the iron ore sector provided unique insights into how governments and customers perceive global shifts.

\"That helps the company, like BHP to navigate very effectively,\" he said.

Market analysts suggest the transition appears evolutionary rather than transformational. The company's growth focus is increasingly shifting toward the Americas, where investment incentives in Argentina, Chile, the United States, and Canada are becoming more competitive than those offered domestically.

\"But I think it is very clear that when you engage across countries in different parts of the world, that a lot of these countries are putting in place very, very attractive incentive regimes to attract investment, and ultimately, Australia has to compete,\" Craig said.

The appointment follows the resignation of Mike Henry, whose tenure included a high-profile but unsuccessful attempt to acquire Anglo American plc. Regarding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments, Craig affirmed that the company would maintain its net-zero targets while applying a stricter cost overlay to ensure economic sustainability.

> \"We will continue to pursue those but we want to pursue them with a level of economic discipline,\" he said. "}```OR (if you prefer it without any escaped newlines as per a strict
