Bajaj Electricals reports quarterly loss as labour costs and weak sales bite
The Indian appliance maker posted a loss of 341 million rupees following a sharp drop in consumer product sales. New labour code charges also hurt earnings.
Insights:
Bajaj Electricals reported a consolidated quarterly loss of 341 million rupees for the third quarter ended December 31. This result marks a significant year-on-year swing from a 333.6 million-rupee profit, driven by a 25% year-on-year decline in consumer products revenue within the consumer products division (Bajaj Electricals) and a one-off labour code-related charge of 288.9 million rupees. These items directly reduced the quarterly earnings of the manufacturer and reflect the immediate financial impact of India's new labour codes and weak cooling-product demand.
The company, which is a member of the Bajaj Group, saw its overall revenue fall by 19% to 10.51 billion rupees. This downturn was largely attributed to the performance of its largest segment, a trend that has also created broader sectoral pressures on appliance makers in India. The loss highlights the challenges currently facing the firm in a shifting regulatory and market environment.
