Heat stunts Austrian crops and forces early slaughter
A sustained heatwave and lack of rain in Austria have depleted Alpine pastures and stunted grain harvests, which are expected to shrink by 19 percent this year. Farmers are bringing cattle down from parched mountains early and some are opting for emergency slaughter to avoid rising winter feed costs.
