Regulators Assess Anthropic AI Risks to Banking Systems
Regulators in Australia and South Korea are monitoring Anthropic's Mythos AI for banking risks. Experts warn its coding skills could expose vulnerabilities.
Regulators are intensifying their oversight of the frontier AI model Mythos, developed by Anthropic, following warnings from experts that its advanced capabilities could be used to destabilize global banking systems. The model's high-level coding proficiency has raised significant concerns regarding its potential to identify and exploit cybersecurity vulnerabilities at an unprecedented scale.

In Australia, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) confirmed it is tracking these developments alongside international peer regulators to evaluate the potential impact on the domestic market. A spokesperson for the agency stated that they are engaging with government bodies and the financial sector to respond to the risks posed by rapidly evolving technologies.
"ASIC is closely monitoring these developments along with peer regulators to assess possible implications for the Australian market."
ASIC further emphasized that it expects financial services providers to be proactive in safeguarding their customers and clients against emerging threats. Simultaneously, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) noted that it would continue to assess the implications of such technological advancements to ensure the ongoing safety and resilience of the nation's financial system.
Regulators in South Korea have also initiated high-level reviews of the technology. The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) recently convened a meeting with information security officials from various financial firms to discuss the specific risks associated with the Mythos model.
According to reports from the Yonhap news agency, the Financial Services Commission (FSC) also conducted an emergency meeting last Wednesday. This session reportedly included chief information security officers from the FSS, major banks, and insurers to evaluate systemic risks. While the FSC was not immediately available for official comment, the coordinated response highlights the growing international concern over the intersection of frontier AI and financial stability.
