AOM and Odyssey Merge in $1 Billion Deep-Sea Mining Deal
AOM and Odyssey will merge in a $1 billion deal to develop deep-sea mineral deposits. The firm aims to extract critical metals from the Pacific Ocean seabed.
Former RIO TINTO LTD CEO Tom Albanese is leading a major consolidation in the deep-sea mining sector as American Ocean Minerals (AOM) merges with ODYSSEY MARINE EXPLORATION in a $1 billion all-stock transaction. The deal, announced on Wednesday, is designed to build one of the world's largest portfolios of underwater mineral deposits at a time when global interest in seabed resources is intensifying. AOM will absorb Odyssey's existing assets and exploration licenses in the Cook Islands, along with those held by CIC Limited.
The venture targets polymetallic nodules found on the Pacific seabed, which contain essential minerals such as cobalt, nickel, copper, and manganese. While the industry faces significant environmental and regulatory scrutiny, the United States and other Western governments are increasingly viewing deep-sea mining as a strategic necessity to counter China's dominance in the critical minerals market.
