Albertsons Companies Inc has announced a downward revision of its fiscal 2025 guidance, reflecting the structural challenges currently facing the U.S. grocery retail sector. The company lowered its identical sales growth forecast to 2.2%-2.5%, down from the previous range of 2.2%-2.75%, and adjusted net income guidance to $2.08-$2.16 per share, compared to the earlier projection of $2.06-$2.19. This adjustment comes as Albertsons grapples with disruptions from the lapse in SNAP benefits, anticipated reductions in Medicare drug prices, and intensified competition from major players like Walmart Inc and discount retailers.
The company's third-quarter revenue was reported at $19.12 billion, missing analyst expectations of $19.17 billion. However, Albertsons' adjusted earnings per share (EPS) exceeded forecasts, coming in at 72 cents compared to the 68-cent estimate. The lapse in SNAP benefits in November, due to a U.S. government shutdown, reduced the company's Q3 identical sales by approximately 10-20 basis points. Furthermore, Medicare drug price reductions, effective from January 2025, are anticipated to impact fiscal 2025 identical sales by an additional 16-18 basis points.
