African Nations Warn Citizens of South Africa Violence
Several African nations have warned citizens in South Africa to stay indoors amid xenophobic attacks. Ghana and Nigeria are now repatriating their nationals.
Kenya, Malawi, and five other nations warned citizens in South Africa of rising xenophobic violence and targeted attacks. The warnings follow anti-immigration protests in Africa's largest economy, where unemployment exceeds 30%. Nigeria is repatriating 130 citizens following the deaths of two nationals.
Ghana facilitated the return of one citizen after a video showed a crowd harassing him for identification documents. Lesotho and Zimbabwe also issued safety advisories, urging migrants to remain indoors. Mozambique President Daniel Chapo met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to call for calm.
