ABN Amro CEO Marguerite Bérard expects lending growth to withstand 50 basis points of European Central Bank rate hikes planned for this year. The bank added €1.5B to its corporate loan portfolio during the first quarter despite rising competition from private credit funds.
Bérard told reporters during a midday Wednesday call that higher borrowing costs will not push clients toward private debt markets. ABN Amro forecasts the ECB will begin cutting rates in 2027 after the 50-basis-point increase this year.
