The United Kingdom-based engineering firm Smiths Group plc reported half-year organic revenue growth that fell short of market expectations, primarily due to a slowdown in the United States construction sector. The group saw its Flex-Tek division struggle as market headwinds impacted demand for engineered components across its construction and appliance segments.

For the six months ending January 31, headline organic revenue for continuing operations increased by 0.4%. This performance was significantly lower than the 2.3% growth anticipated by analysts in a company-compiled poll. Despite the revenue miss, the company remains focused on its streamlining strategy, having recently agreed to sell its detection and interconnect units last year. Following these divestments, the group expects to return approximately 1.5 billion pounds ($2.01 billion) to its shareholders.

The company's largest division, John Crane, continues to navigate the cyclical nature of the energy sector. While it remains exposed to fluctuations in oil and gas, the unit recently secured a multi-million-pound contract in the Middle East. This region accounted for roughly 7% of the group's total revenue in the first half of fiscal 2026, driven largely by John Crane's operations.

Looking ahead, the company has issued a forecast for organic revenue growth between 3% and 4% for the 2026 fiscal year. Management noted that this guidance does not incorporate any potential economic or operational impacts that might arise from conflicts involving Iran. The group continues to pivot toward high-growth industrial technologies, balancing its exposure between the recovering aerospace sector and the more volatile construction and energy markets.
