Sainsbury's backs UK farms with five billion pound deal

Sainsbury's has announced a commitment to invest over 5 billion pounds ($6.60 billion) into long-term contracts with more than 2,500 farms across the United Kingdom by 2027. This expanded partnership model is intended to secure the supply of essential goods, including dairy, poultry, and fresh produce, amid ongoing challenges such as rising operating costs and climate-related pressures.

The retailer recently extended this framework to include 62 British berry farms, finalizing five-year contracts with suppliers such as Angus Soft Fruit, Chambers, Soft Fruits Direct, J.O. Sims, and Dyson Farming. These agreements build upon existing long-term commitments already established within the pork, poultry, and dairy sectors.

According to the company, the goal is to have 60% of its own-brand suppliers for fresh produce, meat, fish, and dairy operating under agreements of five years or longer by the end of 2026. This move provides financial predictability for farmers facing global instability and fluctuating market conditions.

Sainsbury's currently maintains a 15.6% share of the grocery market in the region. This makes it the second-largest supermarket chain in the country, trailing only Tesco PLC.
