Intel to Invest 15 Million Dollars More in SambaNova
Intel plans to invest another $15 million in SambaNova, a startup chaired by CEO Lip-Bu Tan. The deal follows several investments in Tan-affiliated firms.
INTEL CORP is planning to increase its investment in SambaNova, a chip startup chaired by its own chief executive, Lip-Bu Tan, by an additional $15 million. According to corporate records, the investment is subject to regulatory approval and would bring the chipmaker's total ownership of the startup to 9%. This move follows a $35 million injection in February, which helped raise the stake from 6.8% last year to its current level.
The details of this transaction highlight a broader pattern of dealmaking that has drawn attention to the personal portfolio of Tan, a veteran venture capitalist hired a year ago to lead a corporate turnaround. In a recent securities filing, the company disclosed that four unnamed startups received material financing that benefited Tan. A review of these disclosures and public statements identified the companies as SambaNova, OPAQUE Systems, EPIC Microsystems, and 3D Glass Solutions.
