The European Commission plans to extend its Emissions Trading System to include carbon price signals for international flights departing the European Union. Current rules apply only to intra-EU flights, leaving extra-European routes exempt from the bloc's primary pollution-pricing mechanism. Expanding the ETS scope will increase operational costs for long-haul carriers and force a realignment of global aviation pricing.
