The market regulator in China has convened meetings with the nation's leading food delivery platforms, ordering them to implement more rigorous food safety measures. The directive from the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) comes as the government prepares for new industry-wide regulations scheduled to take effect in June.

During the sessions held this week, the SAMR instructed major players including Meituan, Taobao Shangou, and JD.COM INC-CLASS A to strictly adhere to regulatory standards and fulfill their legal obligations regarding food safety. According to an official statement, platforms are required to perform immediate self-inspections and address any identified deficiencies. The regulator emphasized that companies must maintain tight control over the vetting of merchants, internal management systems, and the logistics of the delivery process.

Food delivery platforms must promptly conduct self-inspections and rectifications, exercise strict control over vetting, management and delivery processes, and encourage food delivery riders to participate in safety supervision.

In addition to corporate oversight, the regulator is encouraging delivery personnel to take an active role in monitoring safety standards. These efforts are part of a broader push to ensure consumer protection and operational transparency within the rapidly growing food delivery sector.
