China fined seven e-commerce platforms 3.6 billion yuan for food safety violations. The regulator found Meituan and JD.com failed to verify vendor licenses.
The market regulator in China has issued substantial fines and confiscation orders totaling 3.6 billion yuan ($527.32 million) against seven prominent e-commerce and food-delivery platforms. The enforcement action follows a probe into systemic violations regarding food delivery safety and vendor oversight.
Among the high-profile companies penalized are Meituan, JD.COM INC-CLASS A, and ALIBABA GROUP HOLDING LTD through its Taobao and Tmall platforms. Other entities named in the regulatory statement include Pinduoduo and ByteDance's Douyin service. The regulator noted that these platforms failed to uphold their responsibility to protect consumers by allowing vendors to operate without verified licenses.
