Antigua and Barbuda nominated Ecuador's Maria Fernanda Espinosa as one of five candidates for United Nations Secretary-General. Espinosa, a former General Assembly president, joins two other women seeking to become the first female UN chief. The selection determines the leadership of the global body for a five-year term beginning January 1, 2027.
A UN official told Reuters that the Caribbean nation submitted Espinosa's name for the top post. She previously served as foreign affairs minister and defense minister in her home country.
