USsuccessfully completed a sweeping tariffs deal last week that establishes a new framework for economic cooperation and high-tech manufacturing. Under the terms of the agreement finalized by January 20, 2026, broad import duties on most Taiwanese exports to the American market will fall from 20 percent to 15 percent. This significant reduction aims to address the trade surplus while fostering a closer relationship between the two partners, as the United Statesremains the most important backer and arms supplier for Taiwan.
The deal provides specific incentives for the semiconductor industry, which is often referred to as the sacred mountain protecting the economy of Taiwan. Chipmakers such as the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company that expand their production capacity within the United Stateswill benefit from a preferential tariff structure. These companies will incur lower tariffs on semiconductor imports and related manufacturing equipment, including the ability to import certain items duty-free. During approved construction periods, manufacturers can import up to 2.5 times their new production capacity in semiconductors and wafers without extra tariffs. These developments are expected to be closely watched by investors in the VanEck Semiconductor ETF and the iShares Semiconductor ETF .
