South Africa Increases Steel Import Duties to 30 Percent

The South African government has increased import duties on various steel products to a range of 10% to 30% to support local producers. This move follows recommendations from trade officials to address weak domestic demand and a surge in imports primarily originating from China.

### Defending the Domestic Supply Chain The International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) recommended emergency action last year after ArcelorMittal South Africa and other producers shuttered facilities. The new duties target flat-rolled iron, non-alloy steel, bars, rods, and tubes. ITAC Chief Commissioner Ayabonga Cawe said on Tuesday the decision provides the local industry space to invest in new capabilities.
