S&P 500 Opens Flat on Hot Inflation Data
The S&P 500 remained subdued at Wednesday's open after hotter-than-expected producer price data reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve will maintain restrictive monetary policy. While the Dow Jones fell slightly, the Nasdaq and S&P 500 saw marginal gains as markets reacted to the inflation report.
The S&P 500 rose 0.11% to 7,409.12 at the opening bell as producer price data exceeded economist forecasts. The United States PPI report suggests the Federal Reserve will maintain restrictive interest rates through 2025. Inflation data reduces investor expectations for near-term rate cuts, pressuring equity valuations and borrowing costs.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 86.0 points, or 0.17%, to 49,674.58 at the opening bell. Conversely, the Nasdaq Composite gained 59.4 points, or 0.23%, to reach 26,147.646. These divergent moves followed a hotter-than-anticipated producer price index reading.
