Reliability regulator warns of worsening power outage risks across North America

A new assessment shows shrinking reserve margins and rising winter demand are increasing grid stress. The risk of supply shortfalls is expected to grow by 2030.

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) said the risk of US USUSpower outages is worsening in its latest long-term assessment. This announcement follows a winter storm this week that knocked out power to more than 1 million UShomes and businesses at one point. The assessment, which uses data and other information from mid-2025, warns that rising demand and a changing supply mix are shrinking the margins necessary to prevent blackouts.
