Dutch Government Blocks Kyndryl Takeover of Solvinity
The Dutch government has blocked Kyndryl's 100 million euro acquisition of Solvinity to protect critical digital infrastructure. Officials cited concerns over national sovereignty given that Solvinity manages the digital ID system used by citizens for sensitive medical and tax data.
The Netherlands blocked the 100 million euro ($113 million) acquisition of cloud provider Solvinity by KYNDRYL HOLDINGS INC on Tuesday midday. The decision marks the first time the Dutch Investment Screening Bureau has halted a United States takeover since its 2020 inception. This move signals a tightening of European digital sovereignty as governments prioritize domestic control over critical data infrastructure.
### Protecting the National Digital ID The Dutch government cited public interest concerns following advice from its foreign investment screening agency. Solvinity manages the infrastructure for DigiD, the digital identity system used by Dutch citizens to access medical, pension, and tax records. Lawmakers and activists argued that U.S. ownership could expose sensitive data to legal or intelligence demands from American authorities.
