Moody's relinquishes South African regulatory license
Moody's will rate South African issuers from other sites to focus on international funding. Local banks have two years to use current ratings for capital needs.
MOODY'S CORP surrendered its regulatory license in South Africa on April 30 to pivot toward cross-border investors and international funding. The rating agency will continue to cover South African issuers from its global offices rather than through a local subsidiary. This shift forces domestic banks to adjust how they calculate regulatory capital for credit risk over the next 24 months.
### Shifting Focus to International Issuers The Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) confirmed in a notice dated April 16 that Moody's Ratings-SA renounced its registration. Moody's will maintain a relationship management presence in Johannesburg to support existing customers, mirroring its operational models in Asia and Latin America.
