Fed Governor Warns of Private Credit Contagion Risk
Fed Governor Michael Barr says private credit stress could spark a broader credit crunch. He noted risks in insurance sector overlaps with private lenders.
United States Federal Reserve Governor Michael Barr warned that private credit stress could trigger a psychological contagion and a broader credit crunch. The warning follows several high-profile bankruptcies that led some investors to retreat from the private lending market. Investors fear cracks in private credit may signal systemic risks across the wider corporate bond sector.
Barr told Bloomberg News in an interview on Sunday that while direct links between banks and private credit do not yet appear super worrisome, insurance sector overlaps remain a concern. He noted that market participants might view idiosyncratic failures as evidence of broader corporate sector instability.
