UShave short-listed several projects as initial candidates under Tokyo’s planned $550 billion U.S.-bound investment initiative. Among the finalists is a large-scale data centre infrastructure project involving SoftBank Group Corp , also known as SoftBank Group Corp (Tokyo) . This selection marks a key milestone in a bilateral agreement designed to lower tariffs on Japanese exports to the United Stateswhile building resilient supply chains.
The two governments aim to formalize the first project before Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi sanae takaichimakes her planned visit to the United States this spring. Since December, a consultation committee has held four meetings to discuss potential projects. This committee includes the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Department of Energy, alongside the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Finance, and Ministry of Industry, as well as the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and Nippon Export and Investment Insurance (NEXI).
