J.P. Morgan Estimates 40 Billion Dollars in Excess Capital
J.P. Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon reports 40 billion dollars in excess capital as banks seek regulatory relief. Morgan Stanley met with the Fed on 2026 stress tests.
Major financial institutions in the United States are intensifying their efforts to secure regulatory capital relief, with many already drafting strategies to deploy anticipated excess funds. As regulatory reforms evolve, the banking sector expects to unlock billions of dollars previously held to meet stringent requirements.
JPMorgan Chase & Co Chairman and CEO Jamie Dimon highlighted the scale of this potential windfall in a recent letter to shareholders. Dimon estimated that the bank currently holds approximately $40 billion in excess capital, factoring in the latest revisions to the Basel III endgame proposals. While acknowledging that some reductions in capital requirements since the 2023 proposals were a positive step, he remained critical of the broader regulatory framework.
