Hims Stock Gains as FDA Reviews Peptide Access Rules
Hims and Hers Health shares rose as the FDA reviews restrictions on 12 peptides. Analysts say the move could offer new growth avenues for the telehealth firm.
Shares of HIMS & HERS HEALTH INC rose more than 7% on Thursday as market participants reacted to news that regulators in the United States are considering expanded access to compounded peptides. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced it would convene a panel of experts to evaluate easing restrictions on 12 peptides, which are widely used for applications ranging from obesity and wound healing to longevity and tanning.
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that serve as protein building blocks and are essential for various biological functions. Their popularity has surged among health and fitness enthusiasts, bolstered by the high-profile success of peptide-based GLP-1 weight-loss medications. Despite their growing appeal, the FDA has maintained a cautious stance due to potential health risks, including toxicity and immunogenicity. In 2023, the agency prohibited compounding pharmacies from manufacturing 14 specific peptides, citing a lack of adequate human testing and safety concerns.
