Guyana asked the International Court of Justice to reject Venezuela's claim to 160,000 square kilometers of oil-rich territory. The disputed Esequibo region accounts for 70% of Guyana's land and contains offshore oil deposits. Resolution of the colonial-era dispute would secure the legal framework for multi-billion dollar offshore energy investments.
