Copa Airlines sticks to no-hedge fuel strategy
CEO Pedro Heilbron confirmed the Panamanian carrier will rely on its strong balance sheet and pricing adjustments to absorb higher fuel costs. The airline continues its fleet expansion with a recent order for Boeing 737 MAX jets scheduled for delivery between 2030 and 2034.
Copa Airlines will maintain its zero-hedge fuel policy despite price shocks from Iran, relying on its balance sheet to absorb costs. CEO Pedro Heilbron confirmed the carrier has avoided fuel derivatives for more than 10 years. The strategy tests the airline's ability to pass costs to passengers through yields while maintaining regional competitiveness.
Heilbron told Reuters on Saturday afternoon that the airline is assuming the cost of higher fuel prices. Yields have been adjusted to offset the impact, though the CEO noted they are not covering 100% of the increase.
