China expands digital yuan pilot to 12 additional banks
China will allow 12 more banks to handle the digital yuan as Beijing seeks to accelerate its use. The move aims to boost the currency in international trade.
China is expanding the accessibility of its digital currency by authorizing 12 additional banks to handle the digital yuan, according to sources familiar with the initiative. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to accelerate the use of the e-CNY, highlighting a significant policy divergence from the United States. The newly authorized group consists of seven joint-stock banks and five city commercial banks. Key institutions joining the project include China Everbright Bank Company Limited, CHINA CITIC BANK CORP LTD-H, and China Minsheng Banking Corp., Ltd., along with China Guangfa Bank, Huaxia Bank, Shanghai Pudong Development Bank, and Bank of Ningbo. These additions will bring the total number of banks authorized to handle the digital currency to 22.
Integration of the digital yuan into the mainstream economy has been gradual since its inception in 2019. Most retail transactions in the country are currently dominated by platforms operated by Alibaba Group Holding Limited and TENCENT HOLDINGS LTD. However, analysts believe the digital currency's strategic value lies in its potential for cross-border trade, offering a settlement mechanism independent of Western financial systems such as the SWIFT messaging network.
